An aside

Today’s aside has to do with flowers. There are a few options open to us, but given that, like all things, we’re not interested in the pomp and circumstance (I, for instance, will probably have a flower to hold but no bouquet) of a large flower arrangement, there are a few ideas bouncing around in my head.

#1. Paper flowers
There is a cake shop near here that has beautiful folded paper flowers decorating the display window. I need to take a photo; here’s something random from the internet while you wait.

Pros: They won’t wilt. Color and texture options galore!
Cons: I’ll have to fold them and hope they don’t get crushed in transit. They’re also not very tall…

#2. Small arrangements
This idea involves multiple vases per table, each holding a single “specimen” of flowers, leaves, branches, what have you. With labels!
Pros: Another opportunity to voice the naturalist thing from the invites.
Cons: We’ll need to find plenty of vases (a tall and very scientific option below) and a variety of cuttings.

#3. Silk flowers
Pros: They won’t wilt, plus we have a larger variety of flowers available by virtue of bypassing a growing season. Transit shouldn’t be a problem either.
Cons: Of the three, this is obviously the least natural. At least paper flowers are abstract…silk flowers, not so much. However, it has the sort of taxidermy quality that I associate with late 19th century naturalists…Oh and we’ll still need a variety of vases.

Of course, nobody has to know they’re silk if I put them in covered domes…
